Diwali 2026 in Australia: Date, Puja Time, Events & What to Wear
Share
Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November. The festival season runs from Dhanteras on Friday 6 November to Bhai Dooj on Wednesday 11 November. Because the main day lands on a Sunday this year, Australian families get a full weekend to celebrate, shop and visit the mandir or gurdwara.
This guide covers everything you need for Diwali in Australia: the exact dates, what each day means, when to do Lakshmi Puja, where the big public events are, what the law says about fireworks, and how to dress the whole family.
What is Diwali?
Diwali takes its name from the Sanskrit word dipavali, meaning "row of lights". According to Britannica, it is one of the major religious festivals of Hinduism, Jainism and Sikhism. It falls during the lunar months of Ashvina and Kartika, which usually places it in late October or November.
The festival means different things to different communities:
• In North India, Diwali celebrates Lord Rama's return to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana. Families lit rows of diyas to welcome him home.
• In South India, it marks Lord Krishna's victory over the demon Narakasura.
• For Hindu households everywhere, the lamps invite Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, into the home.
• For Sikhs, the same season is Bandi Chhor Divas. It commemorates Guru Hargobind Ji returning to Amritsar after his release from imprisonment in Gwalior.
• For Jains, Diwali marks the day Lord Mahavira attained nirvana.
Across all of these traditions, the shared message is the victory of light over darkness. That is why every Diwali, no matter where you are in the world, begins with a single lit diya.
When is Diwali 2026? The five-day calendar
Diwali follows the lunar calendar, so the date changes every year. In 2026, the Amavasya (new moon) tithi runs across 8 November in Australian time zones, which makes Sunday 8 November the main day in every Australian city.

Is Diwali a public holiday in Australia? No. Diwali is not a public holiday in Australia, but with the main day on a Sunday in 2026, most families won't need to take leave for the puja itself.
Lakshmi Puja time in Australia
Muhurat times you see online are often given in Indian Standard Time, so be careful. Australia's eastern states are on daylight saving time (AEDT) in November, which pushes the puja window later into the evening.
Lakshmi Puja is traditionally done during Pradosh Kaal, the window just after sunset. Sydney-specific listings from Hindutone place the 2026 muhurat at roughly 8:04 pm to 9:33 pm AEDT. Melbourne sunsets later, so its window starts a little after 8 pm too.
Times vary by city and by panchang, so confirm with your local temple or pandit-ji before you plan dinner around it.
A simple home puja checklist:
1. Clean the puja area and lay a fresh red or yellow cloth.
2. Place Lord Ganesha on the left and Goddess Lakshmi on the right. Ganesha is always worshipped first as the remover of obstacles.
3. Arrange your thali with diya, roli, rice, flowers, sweets and coins.
4. Light diyas at the entrance, windows and every room.
5. Perform the aarti together as a family.
If you're putting together a thali for the first time, our Pooja Thali, Tulsi Mala & Rudraksha Mala Guide walks you through every item.
Diwali events in Australia 2026
Australia's Diwali season now stretches across several weekends, because community melas are scheduled around Saturdays and Sundays. Here are the main hubs.
Sydney. Harris Park in Parramatta, known as Sydney's "Little India", is the heart of the celebrations. The City of Parramatta has confirmed a Diwali event in Harris Park on Diwali day itself, Sunday 8 November 2026. Harris Park's role in Diwali is so established that the State Library of NSW holds a photographic collection documenting its festival stalls and crowds. Blacktown, Castle Hill and Rockdale also host large community fairs.
Melbourne. Federation Square hosts the Victorian Festival of Diwali, with dance, food stalls and fireworks. A second major event, Melbourne Diwali, runs at Marvel Stadium Square in Docklands. Published dates for these events differ between listings, so check the organisers' pages before you travel.
Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. Brisbane's King George Square, Adelaide's Deepavali festival and multiple Perth community events round out the national calendar. The Chalo Diwali 2026 listings are a good place to find something near you.
Can you set off fireworks for Diwali in Australia?
In most of Australia, no. This is the one Diwali tradition that works very differently here.
As reported by Australian Community Media, in NSW anyone setting off fireworks without authorisation faces fines of up to $27,500 and 12 months in prison. Victoria treats illegal fireworks as a criminal matter, and Queensland has banned unauthorised fireworks since 1972. Fireworks have been banned in the ACT since 2009, and Western Australia allows only sparklers and throwdowns. SBS News notes that Tasmania allows a permitted display only on cracker night in May.
The safest way to enjoy Diwali fireworks is at a licensed public display, like the ones at Federation Square and the larger melas. At home, let the diyas, fairy lights and rangoli do the talking.
